I was so grateful I found Youthcare when I did. I’m not sure where I would be without them. I couldn’t stay at home anymore because of conflict. It was really hard to keep going to school, but Youthcare made it possible for me to have a safe place to live while I finished year 12. I have my licence now and even managed to save enough money for my car. I never thought it would be possible for me to go to Uni, but with the opportunity I’ve had to live in the share house I have accomplished so much.

My mental health had really taken a beating trying to couch surf with different extended family members and friends. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I stayed at Youthcare for six months and worked on so many things to get me sorted. The youth workers gave me the time and help I needed and I can’t thank them enough.

My mum died when I was twelve, my dad couldn’t look after my little sister and me so we went into foster care. Sometimes together but we were separated when I went to live with the last family.
I didn’t like living with them so I ran away. I ended up in a shelter and at 16 Youth Care gave me a place to stay in a share house. The workers helped me to set up goals and how to budget and how to look after myself. I even learnt how to cook my favourite foods. I left Youth Care when I was 18 and moved into a unit with my sister. I am happy where I am now and I thank the workers for helping me through a very tough time.
I am working full time and I want to study child care next year.

I was 17 when I first came to Youthcare. I had to leave the shelter I was staying at because I had finished my stay there. I had no idea what I was going to do and I was suffering pretty badly from depression and anxiety. The youth workers really helped me to settle in and learn so much. I was not always going to my course and I wasn’t on the right track. The patience and time that they took out of their day to just sit with me and go through my work and my goals, really helped me get back on track. I’ve had to go through a lot of stress and anxiety because I don’t have anyone. I’ve worked really hard and been able to secure a place at university in Nursing. I’m really excited, because I’ll be the first person in my family to go. Being at Youthcare’s helped me to manage my depression and anxiety because I haven’t been worried about where I’m going to live. It’s given me the opportunity to focus on my education and I couldn’t have done that while I was homeless.
